Modulating Age-Related Changes in Exercise-Induced Cell Signaling Through Phytonutrients: A Focus on the Nrf2 Pathway and Gut Microbiome Interactions
Graduate research, investigation of short-term sulforaphane intervention on NRF2 signaling and the gut microbiome in older adults. Previous studies from our laboratory have shown that as we age, our cells are less able to respond in terms of the ability to protect from stress and adaptation to exercise is attenuated, as compared to young. Research has shown that age-related gut microbiome composition, known as dysbiosis, have been linked to various health issues, including inflammation, impaired immune and cognitive function, and increased susceptibility to diseases. The purpose of this study is to test whether sulforaphane, a phytonutrient found naturally in certain cruciferous vegetables, can improve measures of cell defenses in the blood and restore gut health. The results will serve as preliminary data for a future study where we plan to pair the supplement with an exercise intervention to investigate whether the combination will further boost the response seen by an exercise intervention alone.

Basal Redox Balance: Effects of Age, Sex, and Exercise, April 2023
Dominick Rodriguez, Kayla Harnist, Elyse Policastro, Arielle Condes, Hanna Marque, Ethan Ostrom, and Tinna Traustadóttir
Undergraduate research, post-hoc analysis on potential sex differences in basal redox balance in young and older groups from a completed study in the lab. The research was presented at NAU's undergraduate symposium.

Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Cancer Stem Cell Research, December 2022
Cameron Buntin, Abbey Alevizon, Dominick Rodriguez
For an Honors course, we conducted a literature-based poster presentation on the clinical applications of A.I. in cancer research and medicine. The poster was presented at the Honors College Symposium.

MementoAI, June 2022
Dominick Rodriguez, Nicholas Cuda, Felipe Lopez
For a Dorrance Scholarship Summer Program, we identified and designed an innovative opportunity to improve the human condition at the community level. We proposed an interactive, online memorial platform for people suffering from unresolved grief due to unexpected losses, which was rising due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Medical Impact of Mindset, April 2021
Kiley Baldauf, Ethan Emrich, Sydney Mulligan, Dominick Rodriguez
For an Honors course, we conducted a literature-based poster presentation on the significance of a person’s mindset and emotional intelligence on many aspects relating to health and well-being. The poster was presented at NAU's virtual symposium.
